Due to my husband Dave's rapidly escalating illness, Multiple Myeloma, in 2005, we had stopped accepting deposits on baby birds in October of 2005. I was unable to continue hand-feeding and handling the office work. I saw the need to reduce my work load, as I needed to devote a lot of time to my husband's care during an allogenenic stem cell transplant in 11/05. To keep my staff paid and all of us eating, I sold some of our favorite breeding pairs. This has been a very difficult time for all of us at Aves International, but we are reorganizing now. My husband has been home from the hospital, after a bone marrow transplant, since mid December '05.
Dave relapsed in 2006 and is still fighting Multiple Myeloma. He has had increased pain over the past several months and has suffered three fractured ribs, as his bones have become weaker. The level of tumor cells in his bone marrow is very high. Dave began Velcade and Revlimid chemotherapy in 12/06 and there was no positive response. He had a difficult time in the past few months, with low blood counts and increased pain and fatigue, and the lab results in 1/07 were not at all encouraging.
update 2/17/07 Dave began taking oral Cytoxan in February, as this drug has shown positive results for Dave in the past.
He is already feeling much better in February than he did in December and January and we just got some REALLY POSITIVE
lab results! We're very happy that the trend lines are going our way for a change. Dave is still quite ill with a lot of bone pain
and has suffered another pathological bone fracture of his clavicle.
We thank-you all for your kind understanding and support at this time!

The Parrot Who Owns Me; the Story of a Relationship by Joanna Burger
This is one of my favorite books about parrots! Written by a world-renowned ornithologist, this book will give the reader invaluable insight
into the mind of a parrot. It is a warm, funny, and touching account of the author's special relationship with her Salvin's Red-Lored Amazon Parrot.
